Anterior-posterior view of the ankle Standard radiographs for suspected ankle injury include anteriorposterior (AP), lateral, and mortise views.1,2 On this AP radiograph, the solid white arrow demonstrates a subtle fracture of the distal fibula; the ankle mortise is intact. On AP ankle films, cortical disruption or talar tilt should be identified. If tibiofibular overlap (TFO)—the distance between the lateral border of the tibia and the medial border of the fibula—is less than 10 mm, or the tibiofibular clear space (TCS)—the distance between the medial border of the fibula and the lateral aspect of the posterior tibial malleolus—is greater than 5 mm, associated syndesmotic injury is likely. Greater than 2 mm difference between the lateral and medial joint space above the talus indicates talar tilt suggestive of medial or lateral disruption of this joint.1,2

Anterior ankle dislocation without associated fracture: a case with an 11 year follow-up.

Ankle dislocations without concomitant malleolar fractures, also called pure ankle dislocations, are rare injuries. We present what appears to be the third documented case of a true anterior pure ankle dislocation described in international literature. The mechanism, the management and the complications of this rare injury, are also discussed.

Epidemiological survey of orthopedic joint dislocations based on nationwide insurance data in Taiwan, 2000-2005

BACKGROUND The epidemiology of acute orthopedic dislocations is poorly understood. A nationwide database provides a valuable resource for examining this issue in the Taiwanese population. METHODS A 6-year retrospective cohort study of 1,000,000 randomly-sampled beneficiaries from the year 2005 was used as the original population. Based on the hospitalized and ambulatory data, the concomitant ...

Closed Talar Dislocation without Associated Fracture a Very Rare Injury, a Case Report

INTRODUCTION Total talar dislocations are uncommon injuries and usually seen following high velocity injuries. Total talar dislocations (missing talus) without fractures around the ankle are extremely rare. There are no consensuses on the best treatment of such injuries. To best of our knowledge very few cases have been reported in literature. We hereby report a closed total talar dislocation i...

Early complications in the operative treatment of ankle fractures. Influence of delay before operation.

We have reviewed the early complications of 121 surgically treated closed ankle fractures; the complication rate was 30%, with 14 major and 22 minor complications. Fractures with skin blisters or abrasions had more than double the overall complication rate. Fracture-dislocations had three times as many major complications as simple fractures, and those not fixed within 24 hours had a 44% major ...
